Our History

Hayti Reborn Justice Movement is built upon the foundations of the ‘Hayti’ community of Durham. We take great pride in preserving and continuing the legacy through our efforts. We encourage you to learn about how or organization sprouted from the rich soil and nourishment left by our forefathers and mothers. Please use the points on the timeline below to see our story.

A Resilient Legacy

For more than 100 years post slavery Durham’s Hayti community inspired and equipped thousands of Durham residents to contradict racial oppression to achieve educational, financial vocational and entrepreneurial success. Neighborhoods flourished with secure Black-owned homes, profitable businesses, high-achieving public schools, and a welcoming cultural hubs that provided enrichment opportunities. A century of unprecedented independence and prosperity achieved by African Americans was upended in 1967 by the construction of NC Highway 147. More than 200 Hayti properties were demolished consequently destroying generations of sacrifice, wealth, and hope. Today, the resilient life force that birthed Hayti’s legacy a century ago is persistent in elders, descendants, and new generations of equity visionaries like HR-JM.This is some text inside of a div block.

Birth of Hayti Reborn Justice Movement

The Justice Movement is an offspring of the overarching Hayti Reborn project,  (WEBSITE LINK) a revitalization and economic redevelopment initiative originally spearheaded by Dr. Henry McKoy,  former Principal Coordinator and Director. Numerous meetings, workshops, community outreach, and funding appeals marked precedents to progress led to the start of HR-JM administrative operations in 2022 at 101 E. Main Street in downtown Durham. The County of Durham and the Office of NC Congressman David Price are the early financial backers/sponsors of HR-JM.

Meet Our Team

At the core of our organization are the many dedicated, invested, empathetic individuals who make our Movement what it is. We value the contributions, perspectives, skills and care that each member brings to the table. Our village is nothing without the people who reside, build and share it.

Our Leaders

Lisa “L.A.” Jones, M.S.

Co-Founder & Executive Director of Movement Operations
L.A. is a military veteran, organizer, activist, and social justice advocate within the city of Durham, who is also a 30-year law enforcement veteran.  She decided that instead of continuing to “fix” a system she did not believe in, she would use her talents to help “fix” the problems that were overwhelmingly placing black and brown people in the system.

Steve Chalmers

Co-Founder & Executive Director
of Movement Programs
Steven Wayne Chalmers, a Durham native, is a 32 year veteran and retired Chief of Police of the Durham Police Department.  He has committed his career to reducing crime and improving communities through community collaborations and interactions, firmly believing that crime and disorder cannot be eliminated through law enforcement efforts alone.
